Effective aerodynamic roughness estimated from airborne laser altimeter measurements of surface features

چکیده
Aerodynamic roughness length 0 ) and displacement height 0 ) are important surface parameters for estimating surface fluxes in numerical models. These parameters are generally determined from wind flow characteristics using logarithmic wind profiles measured at a meteorological tower or by balloon release. It would be an advantage to use measurements of land surface characteristics instead of wind flow characteristics to estimate the 0 and 0 for large areas. Important land surface characteristics are the size and distribution of roughness elements (obstacles). This research evaluates the use of high resolution laser altimeter data to obtain these land surface characteristics. Data were collected at the US Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS), Jornada Experimental Range in southern New Mexico, USA over a coppice dune dominated area. These dunes are covered by honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa Torr.) with flat and mostly bare interdunal areas. For this analysis, three 450 m laser transects with a 2 cm measurement interval were used. The distribution and size of dunes were calculated from these laser transects and used to compute 0 . Analysis gave an average z0=4.3 cm and d0=70 cm for the three laser transects, which compares to z0=7±4 cm and d0=98±48 cm calculated from wind profile data measured at a 10 m tower near the laser transects. These results show that the estimation of 0 and 0 for a complex terrain is possible using simple land surface features computed from high resolution laser altimeter data.

Surface roughness over the northern half of the Greenland Ice Sheet from airborne laser altimetry
[1] Surface roughness, defined as the standard deviation of small-scale elevation fluctuations from the linear trend over 0.5 km, can be estimated from high-resolution airborne laser altimetry. Here we present results for the northern half of the Greenland Ice Sheet using laser data collected in May 1995. Roughness is smallest in the central region straddling the ice divide, increases in amplit...

We have conducted airborne measurements over the Greenland ice sheet from the NASA P-3B aircraft using a 150MHz coherent radar depth sounder to obtain extensive ice sheet thickness measurements. Simultaneous measurements of ice sheet elevation were also made using a laser altimeter. In outlet glacier areas along the ice sheet margin, the ice surface is characterized by a very rough, crevassed s...

The Geoscience Laser Altimeter System aboard NASA’s Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite will record the height distribution of laser energy reflected from surfaces within 70 m diameter footprints. For land surfaces, post-processing of this waveform data will be used to estimate the within-footprint mean elevation and surface relief due to ground slope and roughness, vegetation cover, buildi...

The aerodynamic roughness length (Z0m) serves an important role in the flux exchange between the land surface and atmosphere. In this study, airborne lidar (ALS), terrestrial lidar (TLS), and imaging spectroscopy data were integrated to develop and test two approaches to estimate Z0m over a shrub dominated dryland study area in south-central Idaho, USA. Sensitivity of the two parameterization m...

-This paper compares four cont/nental ice sheet radar altimeter retracking algorithms using airborne radar and laser altimeter data taken over the Greenland ice sheet in 1991. The refurbished Advanced Application Flight Experiment (AAFE) airborne radar altimeter has a large range window and stores the entire return waveform during flight. Once the return waveforms are retracked, or post-process...
